Launch of TeenSpace
As Covid-19 outbreaks increased, so did the number of our population's mental health issues.
Here are some stats:
According to the World Health Organization, in the first year of the pandemic alone, “global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%.”
In April 2020, the amount of adults who reported symptoms of depression and/or anxiety disorder was 35.9%, while in February 2021 that number increased 39.3%. (KFF organization)
As you can see here, nearly 50% of people from ages 18-24 have reported symptoms of depression and anxiety, which is why it is important now more than ever to bring attention to New York City’s new therapy initiative.
As of November 15th, 2023, NYC has launched TeenSpace, a free mental health service for teenagers from 13 to 17 years old. On the 15th, Mayor Adams said “Beginning today, all New York City teenagers, ages 13 to 17, can talk, text, or make video calls to a licensed therapist for free through the city's online 'TeenSpace' service. Our young people shouldn't ever feel alone. We're here for them, and together I know we'll build a healthier, stronger city together." Especially given the spike in mental illness due to the covid-19 pandemic, it is vital that teenagers take advantage of this free opportunity to improve their quality of life both now and as adults.
